The Globe University-Minneapolis IT Club was hard at work on August 24, 2012, when they volunteered to set up a network infrastructure for a local nonprofit organization, Trans Youth Support Network (TYSN). The volunteers were Globe students Miguel Davila, Lee Jangula and Anthony Knight; their instructor John Schaffhausen; and Marie Fromm, TYSN network support administrator.

The group worked on site from morning until midafternoon. Miguel and Lee wiped the hard drives of the existing systems and loaded open source software, Ubuntu 11.04. John, with Anthony’s assistance, ran the CAT5e cable from the server to the walk-up computers. Marie worked on rebuilding the server and setting up the server policies.

Projects like this allow Globe University students to apply skills and knowledge they learned in the classroom to real-world situations while simultaneously serving their community. Globe’s information technology program includes courses in operating systems, web technologies, database technologies, networking, security and software development.

TYSN is a partnership of youth and community members working together to support trans youth in Minnesota—youth who challenge or cross over their society’s perceived gender roles and/or expectations.

TYSN was founded as a community response to a series of incidents of violence targeting young transwomen of color in the fall of 2004. Today, their work continues to be shaped and directed by trans youth. Their mission is to promote racial, social, and economic justice for trans youth, with the freedom to self-define gender identity and expression.
