Introducing Accounting Program Instructor, Courtney Lens

A new quarter always presents new faces to the hallways and classrooms here at Globe University–Sioux Falls. Winter quarter is no exception. I recently sat down with Courtney Lens, CPA and one of our new accounting instructors. Courtney is teaching Tax II this quarter. Not only is Courtney a CPA, but she also has a Master’s degree in Education. Her road to Globe University–Sioux Falls has been enriched with a variety of life experiences.

Tell us a little bit about yourself and what brought you to Globe University?

Courtney Lens, CPA Accounting Instructor

Courtney Lens, CPA, and new accounting program instructor

I am currently employed as a CPA at a local accounting firm. My boyfriend Andrew and I built a house in Harrisburg last year to have a place to raise our son, Trigg (14 months). I graduated from University of Sioux Falls with an accounting degree to continue right into the Masters of Education program so that I would be able to teach. I was torn at what to do, knowing I wanted to teach, but also really loving my job as an accountant. I heard of an adjunct position open at Globe, and I knew that would be the perfect fit for satisfying everything I wanted to do.

What do you like most about your job and Globe?

I love that my job away from Globe allows me to experience so many different situations and learn from them. I can then pull those learning experiences and scenarios into my teaching at Globe to help my students get a real life perspective. Globe is great because it is a small community that allows for the professors to know their students more closely and adapt to their learning styles more closely.

What accomplishment are you most proud of?

I am most proud of passing the CPA exams in a matter of 9 months. I never thought I would be able to do it, especially after hearing all the horror stories of it. (I’m also pretty proud of how well we are raising our son! He is definitely an accomplishment. )

What do you like best about teaching?

I get a chance to relay my knowledge and passion for my field to my students. I love being able to tell my students what to expect and giving them real life, current stories to adapt to what they are learning.

Tell our readers something unique about yourself?

I love to travel and love watching funny videos and movies. I’m not a fan of chocolate. I enjoy snowboarding. I would choose mountains over the ocean any day.
