The Community Service Scholarship is a $2,000 scholarship that rewards students for their volunteer service in the community.

To apply, students must meet the eligibility requirements and submit a short essay discussing the volunteer work they are involved with. Dawn and Allison are both students in the veterinary technology program at Globe University-Appleton.

Dawn volunteers her time training dogs at the Winnegamie Dog Club. Dawn was asked by a friend three years ago to help teach puppy classes at the Winnegamie Dog Club. “It sounds a bit cliché, but my life was changed forever,” Dawn said.

Dawn said that her true passion in training dogs lies with the therapy. “The most amazing thing is that dogs just know exactly what to do,” Dawn said. “They will lie quietly on the bed next to someone in the hospital. They will listen attentively to whatever stories the person wants to share with them. They will sit quietly and listen to a child read to them. There has to be something that is only instinct in a dog for them to know what is best for that person.”

Dawn hopes to continue learning and participating in dog training with a focus more in the search and rescue.

Allison (Allie) is the volunteer foster coordinator for Unforgettable Underdogs Dog Rescue. As the foster coordinator, Allie oversees the foster parents and dogs at the rescue. Some of her duties include sending out weekly foster diaries for parents to fill out with updates, transporting supplies to families and taking dogs to scheduled appointments. Aside from her duties as the foster coordinator, Allie volunteers at other events, like promotions or fundraisers, that Unforgettable Underdogs hosts.

“Being a part of this rescue and being able to work with a group of people who share the very same goals and beliefs as I do with regards to saving animals, is truly inspiring and enjoyable,” Allie said.

Allie hopes to continue working with Unforgettable Underdogs and perhaps one day become a board member for the organization.
