So we have all heard the never-ending list of reasons why community service is amazing and through helping others that you truly helping yourself! Globe University-Green Bay recognizes the importance through community service through our “We Care” mission and incorporating applied learning projects in the classroom, among other initiatives. A little known secret is that each quarter Globe awards two students $2,000 for our community service scholarship.
Our spring 2014 recipients were (drumroll please)…Lee Collar and Arica Meidl! We would like to share some small excerpts from their essays.
Lee Collar, business administration student
Volunteering is an opportunity for all of us to get better acquainted with our community. It allows for us to get a better understanding of our community’s needs, and to take some personal ownership in making our community a better place to live and raise our families. Getting involved in any kind of volunteer efforts enriches a person’s life; it brings people together for a common cause and also creates new, positive relationships with others.
Arica Meidl, veterinary technology student
I have been involved with a Whitetail Deer research project, helping out with Puppy Love Rescue and helping at the Oconto Humane Society. All of these experiences have been very beneficial to both me and the organizations that I have helped at as I was able to learn new skills as well as get to practice the skills I’ve already learned. The most rewarding part of volunteering is seeing the appreciation on the faces of the people I am helping. I plan to continue to volunteer in the future as it is a great way to stay involved in the community.
