On Friday, September 11, 2015, Globe University staff members took part in a morning of giving back and ‘paying it forward.’ The twelve full and part-time staff members were divvied into four separate Pay It Forward teams. Each team was given $40 to use to better our Fargo-Moorhead community.
The teams put their heads together and went to work!
One of the teams had the genuine and thoughtful idea to take the $40 and convert it into 40 $1 bills. They then wrote happy and considerate messages on Globe Thank You cards, put a $1 bill in each of the cards and handed them to people in downtown Fargo, just to brighten their day! At least 40 smiles and a few hugs were shared in downtown Fargo because of this kind gesture.
Another one of our Globe Pay It Forward teams took their $40 and with some generosity of their own, built that total to over $110. They then contacted the local Churches United for the Homeless in Fargo and asked how what items/supplies did the charity need. With their $110 they purchased diapers, deodorant, toothpaste, toothbrushes, kitchen utensils and much more with their random act of kindness.
Our third generous Globe group, took the significance and reverence of the 9-11 Patriot Day holiday and recognized the men and women from our local fire and police departments. This group started with $40 and after a few phone calls and some luck, converted it to over $80. With this money, they purchased over 30 tacos for the No.7 Fire Station and a platter of Subway sandwiches for our local ‘men and women in blue’ at our Fargo Police Department.
Our final altruistic Globe team had the brilliant idea to ask for suggested donation amount from local CPAs and other financial folks for doughnuts from the local bakery. They were able continue to compound it and match the previous donation, until it reached over $800! All of this money was then donated to the Junior Achievement chapter in Fargo.
All in all, our campus turned $120 into nearly $1,000 and those efforts will only have a positive ripple effect in our community. We enjoyed this event so much, that we are determined that we would like to volunteer and give back to our community on a monthly basis. We had a blast and we look forward to ‘Paying It Forward’ again!
