Six faculty members from Globe University-Eau Claire had the opportunity to show the community “We Care” by joining 1,600 others from the community at the Empty Bowls Benefit on March 7, 2013. The benefit is a fundraiser for Feed My People Food Bank. The six faculty members ventured to the event prepared for a great lunch of locally prepared soups, specialty breads and desserts.
Feed My People Food Bank provides low-cost food to 14 counties in Central Wisconsin, where $1 will provide $10 worth of food to those who are struggling with hunger. The food bank provides millions of pounds of food to area organizations and food pantries, including the Community Table in Eau Claire. Weekend lunches are packed and distributed to area school children by volunteers at the Feed My People Food Bank.
Guests at the event chose an “Empty Bowl” to take home with them. These bowls are created and donated by local students, artists, and community members. The Empty Bowls Benefit also featured a silent auction where attendees bid on hand-crafted items made by local artisans.
Lauren Sullivan from Globe University’s Career Services team and Instructor of the Career Capstone class states,”The Empty Bowls lunch was just introduced to me this year. I really enjoyed seeing so many people at this event. What an excellent idea to get people from the community to come and share an afternoon with others and support a good cause. With a small donation you receive a delicious meal and a unique, one of a kind bowl–awesome!”
Jeff Ahonen, chair of the paralegal program, was a first -timer at the event. “This was my first time at this event, and I now wish I had attended previously. The soup was fabulous; I sampled two different kinds, and both were delicious! I also enjoyed looking at all of the bowls that the kids had made and donated for sale, and think it is a terrific way to introduce young people to the mutual blessing of community service. I will make every effort to attend again next year!”
Maggie James, campus librarian, exuded excitement for the event stating,“This was a great event for a great cause! I’m already looking forward to attending again next year.”
The faculty members including Eric Konsela, Patti Salimes and Sandy Rutter enjoyed the food and fellowship. We all walked away from the event with a full stomac and a “full” feeling of being able to provide funding for a much needed commodity in our community.
