On October 26, 2010 the Health Fitness Specialist students in HS240 (Fitness Analysis) went to the Univeristy of St. Thomas for a demonstration of body composition testing in the new Anderson Recreation Complex. Dr. Dan Carey, Professor of Exercise Science, measured, tested skin folds, weighed and ultimately hydrostatically weighed Brandon Labelle. Hydrostatic weighing, if conducted properly, can be a very accurate way of testing body fat on an individual. Observing the demonstration were fellow classmates Jon Nichols, Derek Reisner, Andrew Stein, Eric Hayes, Brittany Kline, and Candace Helget.
On November 4, 2010, the Health Fitness Specialist students in HS240 (Fitness Analysis) went to the University of Minnesota for a demonstration of body composition testing in the Bod Pod. Students Jon Nichols, Derek Reisner, Andrew Stein, Eric Hayes, Brittany Kline, Candace Helget and Brandon Labelle had their body composition tested using the the Bod Pod. Sarah Mork, of the University of Minnesota explained the methodology and testing metrics to the students. She explained each of the student’s results and how the information can be used in exercise programming.
On November 8, the Health Fitness Specialist students in HS 102 (Introduction to Exercise Science) went to the University of Minnesota for a tour of the Sports Pavilion and to watch the Men’s Basketball team host Winona State. Chris Howell, Assistant to the Senior Associate Director of Gopher Athletics, explained event directing to the students and led them through the various steps of preparing for game day. Angelica Biseki, Garet Burnside, Jessica Eggert, Dorelle Landsteiner, Heather Larson, Michelle Letendre, Scott Parenteau, Jeff Van Vleet and Duane Whittaker along with Adjunct Instructor Faith Faatz and HFS Program Chair Carrie Rowell enjoyed watching the game with the help of Goldy Gopher.
On Halloween weekend, Instructor Jen Schwartzenbach and several Health Fitness Specialist students from the Woodbury campus competed in the Fearless 5K. Stay tuned as they train and compete throughout the year and take on other campuses for fitness challenges!
