Globe University Green Bay Student Tina Panske’s daughter, Brooklyn, was born more than 3 months premature, weighing just 2# 7oz. Soon after her birth, Brooklyn suffered a brain bleed, resulting in a condition known as hydrocephalus (i.e. an excessive accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid in the brain). Though small in size, Brooklyn proved to be quite a fighter despite improbable odds.
Brooklyn is now 5 years old. Her diagnoses include Cerebral Palsy, Epilepsy, developmental delays, and spasticity (i.e. high muscle tone). She’s undergone 8 brain surgeries, 2 G-tube (feeding tube) surgeries, an eye surgery, and as recently as July 2012, a rhizotomy – a procedure whereby select spinal nerve roots are surgically severed. Following her surgery, Brooklyn predictably lost all muscle control, and she is currently relearning how to crawl, sit, stand, and walk.
Brooklyn’s parents, Tina and Randy, put together a benefit in Brooklyn’s name to raise money to assist in the uninsured medical and rehabilitative costs associated with Brooklyn’s surgery and recovery. One donation to Brooklyn’s Benefit arrived too late for Tina and Randy to auction.
