Q: How important are writing skills to employers?
Brady Lowe
A: Almost any position you have requires writing: emails, policies, presentations, newsletters, reports and more.  To even get a position, you need a resume and cover letter.  People will form impressions of you by your writing.  If you send an email with poor grammar and incorrect spelling, it sends the wrong impression.

Since so much information is shared through the written word, if you have the ability to construct proper sentences it will take you far.  Even better if you can take information and put it into an understandable format for other people, it is a great skill that is useful in almost all positions.

A great tip for learning to write is to read. This will help you develop an ear for correct grammar.  I believe in rereading everything I send out including emails and finding people who like to edit to review important materials.

Q: If someone is interested in working at Gundersen Lutheran, what are some things they can do to make themselves strong candidates?
Brady Lowe
A: It takes a combination of experience and education. The education qualifies you for the position; the experience makes you a stronger candidate.  Gundersen Lutheran, like many organizations, uses behavior-based interviewing. With this type of interview, you have to share stories of your past experiences. You must have experiences to answer the questions. Wherever you work now, ask for stretch assignments and projects that will develop you. If you don’t have an opportunity for a lot of work experiences then volunteer.

If you do volunteer, consider volunteering at Gundersen, you’ll get to know the culture of the organization and what’s important to Gundersen Lutheran. This will all help to make you a stronger candidate.
