Even though this group of massage students has just formed, they have BIG plans! The students are energized and have already taken several steps in the creation of a successful group. Tonic Touch, the name of the new massage group, will strive to accomplish their following mission statement : “To promote a safe and enriching environment for massage therapists and other professionals dedicated to sharing information and skills with each other and the community to raise awareness about massage therapy through Service Learning projects, fundraisers and other events.”
Just how will they work toward their mission? They have set goals to support students and community members though fundraisers and teacher/student collaborations. Next month, the group is holding a Toys for Tots Drive on campus. On December 3 from 9am to 1pm, students will be offering chair massages to community members who drop off toy donations for Toys for Tots.
To increase their massage skills and experience, group members are collaborating with instructors to offer open lab times so that they can gain additional hands on experience. They are hoping to schedule times so students can be supervised in the massage lab as they practice a wider range of massage techniques and develop experience working with a more diverse group of volunteer clients.
The group is also working on widening their knowledge of massage. “The thing that I have noticed the most from the beginning of the Tonic Touch Massage Club is that students have become much more interested in the field of massage therapy. Some are even researching continuing education courses to diversify and stay current with emerging research,” said Brian Beard, Tonic Touch Faculty Advisor.
Be on the lookout for great things to come of this Globe University-La Crosse group! With this strong foundation, they are ready for success!
