Students and staff in the Health Fitness Specialist program at Globe University-Madison West spent an afternoon giving back to veterans during the VFW Post 1318 Health and Fitness Day. The event kicked off with an 18 mile bike ride around Lake Monona, led by VFW Post 1318 Senior Vice-Commander John Hahn which was followed by refreshments and health fitness informational booths back at the VFW.
David Walker, Health Fitness Specialist Program Chair shared how the event originated. “I was approached by staff at the VFW Post 1318 to help them form a Health and Fitness fair. Going over the objectives, I was able to create activities that would be beneficial to attendees. This event was also a great opportunity for our Health Fitness Specialist students to utilize their skills such as teaching basic posture exercises and more.”
The group provided chair massages, conducted blood pressure checks and lead demonstrations on effective posture and balance exercise techniques.
In one demonstration, Pete Drury, student in the Health Fitness Specialist program along with Health Fitness Specialist Program Chair David Walker worked with Veteran David Ketteler on his shoulder issues. Pete and David went over several mobility exercises utilizing band rotator cuffs. They also had Mr. Ketteler perform cane mobility exercises which helped alleviate the pain in his shoulder.
When asked what he thought of the health fair, Mr. Ketteler shared his thoughts. “This event was good timing to address my shoulder pain from a recent fall that complicated previous injuries. I experienced my first massage of my life, received helpful muscle strengthening exercise training and advice with explanation of how and why it was therapeutic. I’m very glad I showed up for this bike ride and free massage.”
Lauren DiCarlo, student in the Health Fitness Specialist program shared her thoughts on her experience. “During the event, I was able to practice using an extra-large blood pressure cuff which I never experienced before. At first it was a challenge, but after much practice, I felt like I got the hang of it. It was also great to be providing blood pressure checks to veterans.”
Globe University-Madison West faculty and students want to thank VFW Post 1318 for giving them this volunteer opportunity and look forward to future opportunities in helping the local Veteran community.
