Rooftop Massages for Fundraiser

Article written by Stephanie Petersen, Massage Program Coordinator, Minnesota School of Business, Brooklyn Center Campus

On May 3, 2009, massage students from the Minnesota School of Business–Brooklyn Center campus participated in an exciting and rewarding event.

The students and their instructors were invited to the 7th Annual Mom’s/Women’s retreat hosted by the Bloomington/Richfield Early Childhood Family Center (ECFC). The afternoon retreat was held in the Rooftop Bar at the Chambers Hotel in Downtown Minneapolis. Our massage students set up their chairs on the balcony outside for a very unique experience.

These moms don’t typically take time for themselves, and they were grateful for the five students and two instructors who donated their time giving massages. The massage chairs were placed on the balcony overlooking sunny Downtown Minneapolis, and the therapists worked on nearly 80 participants!  Jill Oldenburg, who contacted MSB about the retreat, took great care of the therapists, providing them with lunch, beverages, and dessert. Everyone at the event made the therapists feel welcome and appreciated. The students were praised for presenting themselves as professional, friendly, and courteous. They are excited at the prospect of participating again next year.

This special retreat is a fundraiser for the Family Center, but most important it is an inspirational, educational and rejuvenating evening for women and moms of all ages.  About 100 women attended for an afternoon of entertainment, encouragement, pampering, brunch, and a silent auction. Proceeds from the Mom’s Retreat went to the Bloomington/Richfield ECFC’s Advisory Council, which works to enhance the community, provide meaningful events, and enrich quality educational services. Many businesses volunteered services and discounts for the group of women to enjoy and take home.
