Last week, students in our Interpersonal Relations class here at the Minneapolis campus spent some time enjoying our spring-like weather by giving free hugs on Nicollet Mall. The purpose of this initiative was to influence positive behavior without violating the comfort zone of others. By holding signs and repeating “Free Hugs!” the students provided hugs to any individual who wanted one.
“I definitely want to do this every quarter,” said instructor Michelle Block. “It was especially amazing that the students were the ones who really wanted to do this.” Many of the folks in Downtown Minneapolis that took us up on the offer for free hugs said that it made their day and it was great to see the class participants come back to campus with smiles on their faces. What an equally beneficial way to make someone’s day!
