Career fairs can be a great way to either actively search for a position or simply learn more about the hiring process for different fields. Whether you are a first time career fair attendee or have attended them in the past, there are ways to increase the effectiveness and efficiency of your brief interactions with employers.
So what is a career fair and why should you attend? Simply stated, a career fair is an opportunity for employers to set up a space to meet individuals to discuss their company and types of positions they hire for. A career fair is a great way to learn more about the different processes that companies use to hire candidates. Many companies accept resumes and may even set up interviews on the spot. Below, Jessica Spanswick, director of career services shares her top five tips for a successful career fair experience.
1. Come prepared
Knowing what to expect at a career fair is the first step. Employers are there because they want to meet potential candidates. What this means for you as an attendee is to keep it brief and concise. Be sure to print out several copies of your current resume and be ready to answer and ask questions.
2. Dress to impress
Meeting employers at a career fair may be your only chance for a first impression. Employers want to see that candidates are professional and take their job search seriously. Attendees should dress professionally, avoid heavy fragrances, avoid heavy jewelry/makeup, and definitely avoid chewing gum.
Before attending a career fair, take some time to research the companies that are expected to attend. Learning a little bit about an organization and then speaking to it at a career fair can give you an edge. A little bit of research shows that you are interested and serious about your search.
4. Ask questions
A career fair is a time for employers to seek out candidates, but it is also a time for job searchers to seek out employers. Ask questions about the company to see if the culture would be a good fit for you. Ask thoughtful questions that demonstrate your interest in learning more.
A career fair is a great way to either begin a job search or actively seek out a specific company. Try to remember to relax and smile. This can be a great learning experience and a way to prepare yourself for meeting with companies for interviews. Be yourself, relax and enjoy the event!
