Have you ever considered donating just one day a year to community service? If you haven’t, you’d be surprised at how much of an effect just One Day can have—both for your community and yourself!
“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.”
Friday, May 17 marks Globe University’s annual community service day. This is a special day for our organization because it gives us the chance to get out in the community and help serve our community partners. Our community partners hold special places in our hearts, and this is a day we devote to them and to our organization’s “We Care” philosophy and mission.
This year the Globe University-Online staff has decided to help out at the Second Harvest Heartland warehouse in Golden Valley, Minn. The Second Harvest organization holds special meaning to both of our Online brands, Minnesota School of Business and Globe University, and has been the recipient of several of our food collection drives we’ve held in our offices.
This annual Community Service Day will be spent with Online staff members sorting and re-packing food from food drives and donations, re-packaging bulk food such as pasta or cereal into consumer-sized packages, sorting and salvaging damaged products or food items, and labeling cans. These items will then be sent out to the plethora of Second Harvest’s partner agencies, including food shelves and soup kitchens that serve people at risk of hunger.
Some quick facts about Second Harvest Heartland:
- In 2012 the organization reported collecting & distributing over 76 MILLION pounds of food.
- The organization partners with Feeding America, a national network of more than 200 food banks serving every state in the United States.
- The fleet of delivery trucks travels over 500,000 miles per year.
- Second Harvest is responsible for supplying food to over 1,000 food shelf agencies in Minnesota alone.
So, what do you say? Even as a busy professional and current student,do you have just one day in May to give back to your community?
