Building Your Professional Network

Did you know that nearly 70% of job opportunities are filled through word of mouth and never even advertised? Building and maintaining a strong network is a critical element in the job seeking process.   It is never too early to start building your professional network, and starting this process is easy.  Listed below are some important tips and tricks for building your professional network so that you can utilize it when you need it most!

  • Join LinkedIn- LinkedIn is a professional networking site with over 100 million users. This site is a great tool for growing your professional network and staying in touch with individuals you meet throughout your job search.
  • Volunteer- Summer is a great time of year to get an internship or volunteer with an organization in your chosen career field. Use this time wisely to expand your professional network and build relationships with professionals in your field! When your assignment is complete, make sure to ask for a letter of recommendation from a supervisor and stay in touch with these individuals.
  • Join a Professional Organization- Professional organizations are a great way to meet people in your chosen career field. Often, students are offered a discounted rate to join these organizations and the cost is well worth the reward! After you join, make sure to become an active member and attend events put on through the organization to get the most value out of your membership.
  • Attend Networking Events- Networking events are an excellent way to meet a lot of people in a short amount of time. Creating personal business cards can be a great way to exchange contact information at these events, and free business cards can be purchased at Vista Print. To find networking events in your area, use an online search engine or join a networking group for your area on LinkedIn.
