With the holidays rapidly approaching, many people believe it is not a good time to look for new job opportunities. The Career Services Department would like to let you know that this is not the case! There are several reasons that you should not put your job search on a halt over the holiday season:
- Competition is reduced. Many people take this time off from their job search. This means less people applying to positions that are advertised. Continue applying and you could have a better chance of being noticed.
- The job seeking process takes time. There is a good chance that several companies out there are currently collecting applications for positions starting on or after January 1st. The job seeking process can take time, so use your time wisely!
- Networking is key. There are numerous opportunities for networking over the holidays. Carry a business card with you at all times. If you don’t have personal business cards, you can order them online (www.vistaprint.com is a great resource) or have them done at a local print shop rather inexpensively. You never know who you will run into at a holiday party, community event, or while shopping at the mall. Make sure that your contacts know you are looking for work!
- Volunteer your time. There are more volunteering opportunities available during the holiday season than any other time of the year.
By becoming a volunteer, you can expand your network while adding valuable experience to your resume.
