Despite all of the anecdotal evidence we hear in the media these days, the value of College has never been higher. In fact the great recession and recovery has only exacerbated the employment gap between the college grad and those who never went beyond high school. This is occurring now because the occupations that are recovering the fastest are in fields that require at least an associate’s degree while many that traditionally hire high school grads like construction remain mired in the doldrums. A recent study shows that the unemployment rate for all four year grads is 4.5%. For recent grads it’s 6.8%. For those with only a high school diploma it’s 24%. Is college worth it? Well, only if you want a job.
