You don’t need to wait until you graduate to land your dream job. That’s the message Minnesota School of Business – Rochester graduate Taylor Metcalf has for others looking to pursue a career they love.
Metcalf earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration from MSB in the spring of 2015. He said MSB stood out to him because it “wasn’t the norm.”
“I knew that I would have resources available to me both while I was in school and after I graduated,” Metcalf said.
He was hired at State Farm about one year before he finished at MSB.
“I took the initiative to get to know who would be helping me find a career well before I needed to know them. Sure enough, they found an opening that fit what I was looking for and I got the job,” Metcalf said.
Metcalf says you should also get involved as much as you can and network. He was involved in Collegiate DECA, which he said put him in real-life scenarios and allowed him to think of the best ways to handle those situations. He met friends, clients, and mentors in that program.
“Get to know your classmates and professors. At some point in your life you will benefit from knowing these people and having them remember who you are,” he said.
After just 2 1/2 years at State Farm, Metcalf decided to open up his own insurance and financial planning practice, Taylor Metcalf – Country Financial.
“There are a number of different things I love about my job. One great thing is that I am my own boss and my fate is completely up to me. I enjoy creating plans for people’s financial future; as most people know they should have a plan but do not know where to start,” Metcalf said.
Metcalf credits several great instructors and interactive classes for helping prepare him for taking the leap into his career field.
“Like everybody, I was nervous.” Metcalf said. “I felt I was ready to go! I knew enough business knowledge to understand why my boss was hiring me and how what I would do would affect his business. I felt confident talking with him and his current staff. It also put me at ease knowing I could always go back to MSB for help with anything.”
