SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (April 16, 2015) – Globe University, a leader in post-secondary higher education, is proud to announce it has been awarded a $100,000 grant by the City of Sioux Falls. The City created the Workforce Development Pilot Program to provide funding to support activities, ideas and initiatives related to the city’s workforce challenges. Globe University proposed to use its grant to provide local businesses with a dual-training program tailored to attract and develop a highly qualified and productive workforce, and was selected to receive 20 percent of the funds the City has dedicated to this effort.
“As a career-focused college, we share the same commitment with the City of Sioux Falls to maximize opportunities for workforce growth and development,” says Aimee Miritello, campus director for Globe University-Sioux Falls. “We are excited to work with businesses in our community to help them attract and train the skilled employees they need.”
Globe University will use the grant to award businesses in Sioux Falls with a cooperative training scholarship that will be used to develop and implement a cooperative training program for new employees. The businesses will be selected from the industries with the highest economic growth projections and the greatest workforce development needs, including healthcare and human services, administrative and support services, banking and financial services, retail/sales, and hospitality.
For each business, Globe University will design an individualized and relevant education and training strategy that incorporates on-the-job and academic learning.
“The design and model for each program will be developed with industry-established skill standards and driven by the demands of the business for specific workforce skills that are needed to attract and develop productive employees,” says Miritello.
Participants will earn a certificate of completion and also have the opportunity to earn college credit toward a Globe University degree program. Globe University has already begun to implement similar programs in Minnesota by partnering with Schneiderman’s Furniture, Accurate Home Care and North Memorial Medical.
“Globe University has been bridging the skills gap for more than 130 years, preparing tens of thousands of career-focused graduates through our industry-relevant curricula and cooperative training programs,” says Jeanne Herrmann, COO of Globe University. “We are thrilled that the City of Sioux Falls has given us the opportunity to strengthen the workforce in this particular area.”
