‘Tis the Season to Give

A big part of Globe University’s mission includes “We Care.” We demonstrate this through year-round volunteer work interlaced within our communities, and we want to encourage you to give back as well. Here is a list of resources to help you give back this season.

Help with the hospitalized

The Sanford Medical Center in Sioux Falls welcomes volunteers to their facility, even allowing them some choice in how they’d like to participate. Some of the many volunteer jobs available include:

  • Comforting newborns or sick infants by holding and rocking them. Human contact is an important factor in helping babies feel secure.
  • Being a host or hostess in the dialysis unit. Read, play games or just converse with patients who are undergoing this intensive treatment.
  • Escorting patients to the waiting room or examining room when they are first admitted to the hospital. Your presence and friendly smile will help put people at ease.

Assist the elderly

Elder Helpers is seeking volunteers in Minneapolis to assist the elderly with daily tasks associated with living independently. You may be asked to help them shop, prepare light meals or just provide good company.

Help students succeed

Do you excel in a particular area of study, such as reading or math? A Place for Grace in St. Cloud is looking for volunteers to tutor students pursuing their GED. You can make a difference in a young person’s future by giving your time and knowledge.

Protect nature

Are you interested in helping preserve the natural environment? The government of Elk River needs volunteer applicants who want to protect the natural beauty of Elk River for future generations.

Sometimes volunteering means donating. Donate your extra clothing, furniture or small home appliances to a charity such as Salvation Army, Goodwill or a local charity near you.

The American Red Cross is always looking for people to donate blood and plasma. Your donation will be used to help save the life of victims of accidents and catastrophes across the nation.

Wherever you live, there’s sure to be a food bank in your community. Find out where it is (just type “local food bank” into your search engine) and give them a call to find out their specific needs. Make it a family event by giving your kids some cash and shopping together as a family. Bring the kids with you to deliver the groceries to the food bank so they can experience firsthand the joy of giving.

Influence children

Do you get a kick out of seeing children learn and grow? The Boys & Girls Club of Wausau, Wisconsin is looking for responsible adult volunteers to teach sports, tutor, share specialized skills like sewing, pottery, music and photography, and a whole lot more.

What about you? How will you influence the world around you? Will you give back to the community? There’s no better way to build a lasting legacy than to share your knowledge, skills and experience with those less fortunate or those who need a helping hand. We all need help at some point in our lives. It’s your turn to help. Let this holiday season be the time when you’re the one to extend your hand.
