Massage therapy students pampered military families at the second annual Blue Star Military Appreciation Event at Active Generations in Sioux Falls. The event is just one example of the many ways in which students seeking massage therapy training at Globe University-Sioux Falls gain hands-on experience before they even begin their careers.
“Blue Star” is the title given to active military families, and Globe University played a large part in this special day of thanks that featured free food, fun and fellowship. The event planning began in early June with a small committee who had an idea to show appreciation to all the families who have had someone on active duty or who recently return.
The Globe University students provided free chair massages to pamper military families. Other students from the university’s Global Citizenship class offered face painting, read books to kids, served food, played games and offered family portraits.
“Thanks for ALL your help,” said Lisa Howard, with Active Generations. “Your Globe reps were awesome. People loved the massages and I know appreciated the family portraits.”
Trish Meyer, a military mom, said, “They turned out great,” referring to the ‘Portraits for Patriots’ family photos.
Student-volunteers were involved through our Service/Applied learning projects that are infused in Globe’s curriculum. It gives students an opportunity to apply what they learn in the classroom and help in the community.
“Active Generations was excited to be able to show our appreciation to Active Duty Families by hosting this event,” exclaimed Howard. “It was so fun to see families enjoying the day and spending a relaxing and fun time together as a family! We thank them for their on-going sacrifices as their loved ones protect our country!”
Shelley Hanisch, director of development at Active Generation, said, “It was especially rewarding to see the children at the event. They were filled with excitement. The zoo animals were a big hit. The families really seemed to be enjoying themselves and appreciated being recognized for their service.”
The event was attended by over 30 families and 140 individuals.
