The Globe University-Sioux Falls campus is still buzzing about the weeklong celebration of our five-year anniversary. Has it been that long already? It was a team effort with events taking place all week and ending with our Annual Touch a Truck event. Our director of admissions, Charlie Buehler, spearheaded this weeklong celebration.
“It took us an entire year to plan the event…but it took the entire campus five years to get where we are today,” Charlie said. “You can’t help but be embraced by the amount of pride this campus has for what we do for our students and our community.”
Here are some fun facts about Globe University-Sioux Falls and our five years:
- Our first class in the fall of 2008 had 83 students
- We have graduated 259 students in our five years
- Our average placement over those five years (in-field or in-related-field) has averaged 80%
- We have completed more than 1,000 applied learning projects with our community partners
- Our students have logged 7,000+ volunteer hours, and our staff and faculty have logged another 3,000+
- As an organization, Globe University has awarded more than $2.7 million to our military students
- We have successfully completed two overall accreditation visits by our national accrediting body (ACICS) with zero citations and have been awarded honor roll status. We have also had very successful programmatic accreditation visits with both our medical assistant and veterinary technology program accreditors, Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES) and American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA).
What a great five years it has been—the next five will be even better! Here’s a rundown of the week’s celebratory events:
Military Student Appreciation
Many of the staff, faculty and students showed their appreciation to our military student population with a small ceremony, homemade treats, and kind words. Globe University-Sioux Falls prides itself on its level of commitment to the military students on campus. This is no small group, either. Twenty-five percent of the Globe-Sioux Falls student population has military affiliation. The Sioux Falls campus is represented by four of the five branches of military and every program on campus has military students in it. If you or someone you know has military affiliation and is searching for a solid educational experience, contact the Sioux Falls campus today.
Annual Community Partner Luncheon
Our Annual Community Partner Luncheon celebrates the relationships we’ve built in our Sioux Falls community. We welcomed community partners from more than 20 organizations, several employers and alumni, with more than 40 people in attendance from outside of our university!
We also were very excited to have two South Dakota State Representatives on campus—Jim Stalzer, representing District 11, and Marc Feinstein, representing District 14 amongst our various community employers and organizations.
Career Symposium & Alumni Event
The Career Symposium was a career-networking event where we invited employers, current students and graduates to meet and greet. Employers gave tips on resumes and interview skills to students and graduates while marketing their open positions.
Guidance Counselor Breakfast
We hosted counselors from area high schools (CTE, West Lyon, and the coordinator from USucceed were present). During this breakfast, they learned about the exciting opportunity their students have to participate in ACT PrepMe and the other free services we provide to area high schools. ACT PrepME is a program designed to help students be successful when taking the ACT. The counselors were able to ask questions about our services and learn more about Globe University. The purpose of this breakfast was to continue to build a positive relationship with the area high schools.
Business Alliance Workshops
This workshop series enlightened the public about the exciting things happening here at Globe. We began with discussing the iPad, eResources, and the educational user experience initiative. Participants learned how Globe University is incorporating the use of the iPad into their classrooms. We also discussed our Business Alliance Scholarship, gave an overview of our quarterly internship/externship opportunities, and the career services team offered solutions for organization’s staffing needs.
3rd Annual Touch a Truck
Nearly 300 attendees braved the weather to enjoy our 3rd Annual Touch a Truck event. It was a free family safety event; kids got to meet our local heroes and learn about the equipment they use. There were inflatables, face painting, animals from the zoo, and digital fingerprinting and photography provided by New York Life. Refreshments sold at the event supported the local charity, Veterans Build. Veterans Build is a Sioux Falls American Legion #15 initiative that builds housing for veterans and their families.
Some of the attendees included: SFPD, SFFR, Southeastern Electric, J&L Harley, Big Sioux Power Sports, Concrete Materials, Novak, Stan Houston, and the Great Plains Zoo.
As we celebrate the accomplishments of the past five years, we look with excitement to the future. We are about to launch a new, digital learning model this fall called — Educational User Experience. All of our students and faculty will be equipped with iPad tablets and other Apple technology for a more engaging classroom experience beginning fall quarter 2013. We are very excited about this new direction, and if you are interested in finding out more, contact the Sioux Falls campus today at 605-977-0705.
