Graduate Spotlight-Patti Pace: “Do Something”

“I was living in Brainerd, Minnesota; turned 40, and my husband announced he wanted a divorce,” remembers Patti Pace. “I didn’t know what I was going to do with my life.”

That was in May of 2009.  But this week, Patti graduated with her associates of applied sciences in medical assisting from Globe University-Sioux Falls.

Globe University Early Fall 2011 Graduate, Patti Pace

With the collapse of her marriage, Patti knew she needed to do something. She says she always wanted to be in the health care field.  So in October of 2009, she enrolled in the medical assisting program at MSB in St. Cloud and received her diploma. While working at her externship, she was then offered a job at Sanford hospital in Sioux Falls, SD -140 miles away. The distance may have stopped others, but Patti took the opportunity because she knew there was a Globe University campus in town- allowing her to complete her degree while working.

“I wasn’t even a student yet at Globe…but when I got to Sioux Falls, the career services director –Josh Ring– gave me a place to stay, printed out and put together my resume folder, and gave me his approval on my interview outfit,” said Price.

Patti credits all her success to Globe University’s “We Care” philosophy.

“They treat you like family.”

Globe student, Patti Pace works at SD Urban Indian Health in Sioux Falls

Today, Patti is using her skill set to help people in need at the South Dakota Urban Indian Health Clinic, designed primarily for Native Americans or anyone economically disadvantaged. Her work there and at Sanford are driving her to continue her education and receive her RN.

Patti encourages others going through unexpected life changes to just keep breathing, take a chance, and do something.

“My world had turned upside down,” remembers Pace. “I wasn’t sure if anything was going to turn out, but now I would definitely say I am in charge. Don’t wait for something or someone to do it for you. Just do something!”
