Considering a Vet Tech Career? Look for Work in These Top Cities

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the pay for veterinary technologists, or vet techs, varies significantly from one job to the next. Those in the highest 10 percent of the field earn over $47,410 a year, while those in the lowest 10 percent earn less than $21,890 per year. While many factors can affect this difference, location is one of them. If you want to be at the higher end of that range, then you need to look for a job in one of these locations:

Norwich, Connecticut, Offers the Top Salary

If basing the “best cities” status on salary alone, then Norwich is the top choice. This Connecticut city offers vet techs an average salary of $50,180, which is above the top 10 percent rate for the nation as a whole.

Best cities for vet techsLos Angeles and Long Beach, California, Offer Strong Growth Potential

In Los Angeles and Long Beach areas, vet techs and veterinarians are expected to be in high demand in coming years. In fact, the area had 6,421 projected jobs for animal care professionals in 2013, with 1,159 new jobs added. However, a high cost of living can detract from some of the benefits of this high demand in this particular area.

New York Metro Area Has High Growth and High Wages

The New York metro area offers the highest hourly wage for vet techs, with an average wage of $17.11, and a high growth rate of 51 percent. However, like Los Angeles, a high cost of living can deter from this, especially for vet techs that live within the city limits. Poughkeepsie, which has an annual average salary of $44,240, offers a high wage option outside of the city limits of New York, but close enough to be convenient to the city.

Madison, Wisconsin, Offers High Pay and a Lower Cost of Living

The cost of living in most of Wisconsin is much lower than cities like New York and Los Angeles, but the Madison metro area is actually one of the top paying areas for vet techs, with an average annual income of $46,570. This combination of affordability and high pay makes it an appealing place to live for those who wish to pursue this line of work.

Pursuing a career as a vet tech can be both financially and emotionally rewarding. Finding work in one of these locations can help improve the rewards of your career, but before you can you need the right training. Globe University offers an excellent vet tech program to consider as you look for training in this field.
