Plants for Pets: Vet Tech Students Host Plant Sale for Humane Society

Every year in May, the Vet Tech Club at Globe University in Wausau has a plant sale.  Funds raised from the sale go to a cause of the club members’ choice.  This year they decided the funds raised would go to the Lincoln County Humane Society in Merrill, Wis.

Globe University’s Wausau campus works closely with the Lincoln County Humane Society in helping care for the pets housed there. The veterinary technology degree program helps the nonprofit by performing routine exams, giving vaccinations, grooming the animals, making sure they are free of any parasites, and spaying or neutering them before going back to the shelter. The humane society provides these animals for our students to learn how to handle and take care of them for their future careers in the veterinary field.

The vet tech degree students wanted to do something in return by selling plants to raise money for the Humane Society. The Vet Tech Club received plants as well as planters by donation from campus students and faculty.  They even got donations from a local store.

The money raised will be donated to the Lincoln County Humane Society so they can provide proper care for the animals while at the shelter.  The shelter is in need of many items such as dog and cat food, puppy and kitten food, litter and litter boxes, blankets and cleaning supplies, among other things.  They strive to maintain a safe and comfortable place to temporarily house these animals so they can be healthy and ready for adoption at any time.

The vet tech students worked the sale of the plants. They made up a schedule for each person donating their time to sit and sell the plants and planters.

“I don’t mind sitting and selling the plants; the money is being raised for a good cause and the shelter helps out so much,” said vet tech club president Chelsea Pollard. “Why not take the time to help them out?”

The plant sale was a huge success, and the students are looking forward to donating the money raised to the Lincoln County Humane Society.
