Military Student: You Get Back What You Put In

Star Student of the Month, Dawn Burdette

Our Star Student of the Month is Dawn Burdette, who attends the Globe UniversityWoodbury campus as a military student in the health fitness specialist program.

Dawn realized she wanted to pursue a health fitness specialist degree when she was only 18 years old and serving her first tour in the United States Navy, where she was required to stay healthy and fit. She also recognized the imporance of good health when her mother became disabled and she needed to help care for her.

“I remember loving the power I gained from being strong and doing things for myself,” said Dawn. “I feel a sense of pride and accomplishment in helping my mother make each day a little less of a struggle.”

After figuring out that strength conditioning and gym ownership were in her future, Dawn started competing in powerlifting, which is where she met her husband.

Dr. Carissa Barnes, one of Dawn’s instructors, admires Dawn’s commitment to her educational goals, saying, “Dawn is in her first quarter in the health fitness program. Not only is she taking a full load of courses at Globe University, but she also owns a business, works as a personal care assistant for her mother, and is a wife and mother herself.

“What I appreciate the most about having Dawn in my anatomy and physiology course is her eagerness to learn. She is always interactive, asking well thought out questions that really correlate the material to her everyday life and future profession.”

Dawn mentions how important it is to find mentors such as Dr. Barnes and her Health Fitness Specialist Program Chair, Reid Perry. “I asked them to mentor me not only through my program, but after graduation as well.”

“Dawn is an outstanding student, always goes the extra mile to learn the material and I am very fortunate to have had her in my class. I expect big things to come from Dawn,” said Dr. Barnes.

What advice would you give other students?

Dawn responded by stating that students should take ownership of their career path. The old saying “you get back what you put in” could not be more true when it comes to your personal and professional path.
