A registered nurse (RN) can be found in many types of industries – not just at healthcare organizations. RNs are vital for a healthcare organization to function properly, as they provide much of the care that patients receive. They also play an important role in schools, businesses, community organizations, religious institutions and home health.
Nursing Job Descriptions
Although the duties of a RN vary depending on the needs of the organization, many RNs are responsible for one or more of the following:
- Perform patient histories
- Complete physical examinations
- Administer medications
- Carry out medical treatments
- Consult with healthcare professionals, such as physicians, pharmacists and more
- Provide education to patients and families
Some RNs decide to specialize in an area they are passionate about.
